Summer Programs

Summer Institute

EHTP-UP Summer Institute is a vital program for incoming freshmen and high school students. The five-week program focuses on college preparation and offers specific, advanced areas of study based upon students’ interests.  Summer Institute provides programs not offered at our students’ schools—and certainly not available to them over the summer months. Summer Institute students have life-changing experiences that influence their educational paths and career goals in positive ways. As in previous years, the 2010 Summer Institute will include two full weeks for participants to travel together to University of Virginia (UVA), where they reside in campus dorms, take classes and work on group projects.

Camp 1880

Camp 1880 is our newly-expanded Robotics summer program for high school students. It is part of the five-week Summer Institute and includes the two-week trip to University of Virginia where Robotics students take part in an in-depth study of physics and science.  While at UVA, participants in Camp 1880 receive intensive physics instruction coupled with lab time that stresses problem solving and design, reinforcing the concepts learned during lecture sessions.  During camp, participants cover three months of New York State Regents-level physics, create marketing goals and strategies, study circuitry, programming and Design/Build concepts, and learn CAD software.  In 2009 100% of participants scored an 80% or higher on a final assessment covering this material.
