East Harlem Tutorial Program is gearing up for the 2011-2012 school year and we would love to have you join our team! Empower children and youth by building the confidence, academic and social skills they will need to succeed! Volunteers serve as role models, mentors, and academic tutors to our students in grades Kindergarten through 12. We are looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to support our wide range of academic programs:
ELEMENTARY PROGRAM
Homework Help
Remember homework?! Here’s your opportunity to help elementary school students conquer their most difficult homework assignments. You will meet for at least one hour a week with small groups of kindergarten to fifth grade students on Mon – Thurs. from 3:30 – 4:30PM.
Reading Partners
Help young students discover the joy of reading. You will work one on one and in small groups with second to fifth grade students to enhance their literacy skills and develop a love for reading. You meet for an hour and a half on Monday or Tuesday from 6:30 – 8PM or on Saturday from 10 – 11:30AM.
UNIVERSITY PROGRAM
Middle School Tutoring
Work with individual or small groups of middle school students to help them tackle those subject areas they are struggling the most with in school. Subjects include math, English, science, and history. Tutors should feel confident tutoring these subjects at a middle school level. Tutors meet with their students once each week Monday – Thursday from 6:30PM – 8PM or Saturday from 10 – 11:30AM.
High School Tutoring
Help high school students succeed in core subjects (math, English, science, history, Foreign language). Tutors should feel confident tutoring high school level subjects, especially in math (geometry, algebra, or trigonometry), science (living environment, Earth science, chemistry, or biology), history (global or U.S.), and foreign languages (Spanish or French). Tutors meet with students once each week Monday – Thursday from 6:30 – 8PM or Saturday from 10 – 11:30AM.
Science Technology Engineering and Math Program: Robotics
Enjoy working with high school students in math, science, technology and design. Students build robots and enter their projects in a national competition. Volunteers commit at least three hours a week. Check out our page at

College Mentoring Program
Applying to college can be a daunting task! That’s why we need you to be a mentor to high school seniors trying to navigate the college application process. You will be matched with one senior ensuring that (s)he successfully applies to college, finds financial aid and/or scholarships, and chooses the college best suited for his/her needs. You will meet once each week and serve as a role model and resource as your mentee explores the wide world of college! Mentors meet with students on Tuesday or Thursday from 6:30 – 8PM.
ADULT EDUCATION
ESL
Assist in teaching immediate, practical, and useful English to adults. This program meets from 12 – 2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
